Questions And Answers

The andropause tends to affect some men after the age of 40. This is when testosterone levels start to decline and the symptoms associated with andropause begin to manifest.

It has been found that one of the most prevalent, yet unrecognized, symptoms of mid-life hormonal changes in men was male irritability and anger.

Andropause is usually triggered by low testosterone. Testosterone is responsible for male physical characteristics such as body and facial hair, deep voice, muscle strength, strong sexual drive and competitive behaviour. The testes produce less testosterone as men age.

Male menopause (or andropause) is a period of gradual adjustment when the body adjusts to lower levels of testosterone.

According to some sources, the discomfort of andropause may last 15 to 20 years

The main symptoms are

  • mood swings
  • irritability
  • reduced ability to exercise
  • fat redistribution, such as developing a large belly or “man boobs”
  • general lack of enthusiasm
  • difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • increased tiredness
  • poor concentration
  • short-term memory.
  • general fatigue
Replacing testosterone in the blood is the most common treatment for men going through andropause.

This treatment may provide relief from the symptoms and help improve the quality of life in many cases.

Lifestyle changes such as increased exercise, stress reduction, and good nutrition also help.

Approximately 30% of men in their 50s will experience symptoms of andropause caused by low testosterone levels. A person experiencing andropause may have a number of symptoms related to the condition and could be at risk of other serious health conditions such as osteoporosis without proper treatment.
