Description

Ovulation is the time in your cycle when one of your ovaries releases an egg. If it is met with sperm, it can result in fertilisation and pregnancy, but if it is not fertilised, it’s absorbed into your uterine lining. During your next period, the lining and the egg are shed from your body.

Progesterone, is an integral part of fertility treatment – a hormone that is produced in your ovaries, and is at its highest during ovulation. Progesterone’s most crucial achievement is that it prepares the endometrium, or uterus lining, for pregnancy. Essentially, it thickens the uterus lining to allow a fertilized egg to implant. Progesterone is an integral part of fertility treatment.

Without enough progesterone during the critical implantation window, the uterine lining may not be receptive to an embryo and pregnancy may not happen. Or, if it does, it may end up in early miscarriage.

This test is for you if:

  • you are struggling to conceive and you want to check that you are ovulating as part of your fertility investigations
  • you are planning a family and want to check you are ovulating normally
  • you want to repeat a previous inconclusive result
  • you want to check whether your progesterone level is high enough for ovulation to have occurred

Please remember though, these tests are not a substitute for seeing your doctor. Our doctors will interpret your results based on the information you have provided, but will not diagnose, consult or provide any treatment. You will be advised to see your doctor for any necessary follow-up action.

How to use

It is imperative that you get your blood drawn on the CORRECT day of your menstrual cycle.

If you get the test done on the WRONG day of your cycle, the results can end up being inconclusive or even worse, suggest you have a problem, even when you don’t.

Take this test of day 7 days before your next period is due, which is usually day 21 of your cycle. However, if you do not menstruate, you can take this test at any time.

If you have used one of your fingers to apply hormone gels/pessaries in the past 4 weeks, use a different finger to collect the sample. Ideally, use gloves for these creams in the 4 weeks prior to this test.

Do not take any biotin supplements for 2 days before this test. If your doctor has prescribed biotin, speak with them in advance

Biomarkers

Progesterone- Progesterone is a steroid hormone produced in the corpus luteum and the adrenal glands. Its main role is to prepare the body for and support a pregnancy. It is produced in increasing amounts in the second half of the menstrual cycle.

If your results show that you have weak ovulation, or low PdG, we would encourage you to talk to your doctor, or have a chat with a fertility nurse. They can advise you on your next steps.

If a progesterone blood test shows that your progesterone levels are low, there are actions you can take to try and raise them. You could also talk to one of our nutritionists about foods that contain progesterone-boosting properties.
