Hormones really do govern your reproductive system, which is why it is important to try and keep them as balanced as possible. So, wherever you are in your reproductive journey, this test will give you an insight into your hormonal status.

With this advanced profile, you can look at the hormones that support the maturation and release of a healthy egg for ovulation and conception. It also includes a full thyroid function test with thyroid antibodies to give you a complete view of your thyroid hormones.

This test is for you if :

  • If you want to test your hormones to see if a hormone decline or imbalance could be causing symptoms such as irregular periods, mood swings, and male characteristics (acne and male pattern hair growth associated with polycystic ovaries).
  • You want to test your testosterone levels. (High levels of male androgens can be associated with polycystic ovary syndrome).
  • You want to check your menopausal status.
  • You want to check your thyroid health.
  • You want to check whether your hormones are normal for your stage of life or for more specific reasons, like if you’re planning to start a family and want a thorough hormone MOT.

How to use

This test should ideally be taken on day three of your cycle, (three days after your period has started) – although it can be taken on days two, four, or five.  It can be taken any time if you do not have periods. Please take your sample before 10am.

Please note that any hormones you take for contraception or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) will influence your results.

You should take this test before you take any medication or vitamin/mineral supplements. Do not take biotin supplements for two days before this test, discuss this with your doctor if it is prescribed.

If you are looking for a true picture of your natural hormone status, please take this test at least 12 weeks after stopping any hormone replacement or contraceptive pill, implant, or hormone IUD.

If you are premenopausal and do not wish to become pregnant, please use an alternative non-hormonal form of contraception.

If you have not been through menopause, we suggest waiting until your periods have re-established a regular cycle (for you) before taking this test.

Biomarkers

Hormone phase – Hormone phase is used to determine the appropriate range for hormone markers and is calculated using the date of last menstrual period and the date of the sample.

FSH – FSH helps control the menstrual cycle and stimulates the growth of eggs in the ovaries

LH – LH helps control the menstrual cycle. It also triggers the release of an egg from the ovary

Oestradiol – E2’s main function is to mature and then maintain the reproductive system. During the menstrual cycle, increased estradiol levels cause the maturation and release of the egg, as well as the thickening of the uterus lining to allow a fertilized egg to implant

Testosterone – Testosterone is produced in the testicles of men and, in much smaller amounts, in the ovaries of women. It plays a role in libido, the distribution of muscle and fat and the formation of red blood cells.

Free androgen index – The free androgen index (FAI) is a calculation used to determine the amount of testosterone which is free (unbound) in the bloodstream.

Prolactin – Prolactin is a hormone which is produced in the pituitary gland and plays a role in reproductive health. Extreme levels (too high or too low) of prolactin can lead to infertility.

SHBG – SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) is a protein which transports the sex hormones (testosterone, oestrogen and dihydrotestosterone (DHT)) in the blood.

TSH– thyroid stimulating hormone. Good thyroid function is needed for fertility and many women don’t realise it. It can also affect sperm production in men.

Free T3 – Triiodothyronine (T3) is the more active of the two thyroid hormones produced by the thyroid gland.  Free T3 measures the level of T3 that is free, or unbound to protein, and is available to regulate metabolism.

Free thyroxine– Thyroxine (T4) is one of two hormones produced by the thyroid gland. It works to speed up the rate of your metabolism.

Thyroglobulin antibodies – This test looks for antibodies to thyroglobulin, a protein which is specific to the thyroid gland.

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies – This test looks for antibodies to thyroid peroxidase which indicates that the body’s immune system is attacking the thyroid gland and impairing its function.

Results and Next Steps

Taking your home test is simple. Your test kit will arrive in the post with everything you need to collect your sample, including easy-to-follow instructions.

You will need to activate your test kit and create an account following the instructions provided in the kit.

Once you have collected your sample simply post it in a post-box using the return envelope provided.

You will receive an email once your sample has arrived at the laboratory for analysis, and another when your results are ready to view.

Your results will be displayed in your account, along with a doctor’s commentary.
